• Increase of 38 per cent since December 2023
  • More than 139 million Photo Payments in total in 2024

Munich, 29 January 2025. Gini, a provider of innovative payment solutions, is setting a new benchmark: over 139 million Photo Payments were processed by more than 6.67 million active monthly users in 2024 (as of December 2024). Of these, 13,920,717 Photo Payments were made in December alone. The popular feature is integrated into numerous major German banks and savings banks and is also used by private health insurers via the Gini Pay Connect interface to the banking app. The majority of invoices (139 million) were processed in banking, with just under 10 million more documents in other industries.

The growing popularity of the feature is also reflected in the results of a representative YouGov survey* conducted on behalf of Gini in September 2024: 43 percent of banking app users are familiar with the payment feature via photo or invoice scan, and 26 percent of those who are aware of the feature use it several times a month.

Pay bills simply, quickly, and securely

Paying a bill via the banking app without having to laboriously type in the payee’s details is becoming increasingly popular among banking app users. The Gini Photo Payment is now an integral part of German banking apps. Regardless of whether invoices are available as a scan, PDF, or photo on the smartphone, All the necessary details are accurately captured and automatically transferred to the transfer form. Reading an invoice with Gini takes just 1.2 seconds on average.

The Gini Pay Photo Payment was recently expanded to include the Return Assistant, which makes it easier to pay the invoice after a return: Users can automatically calculate the amount to be paid for online orders where only part of the goods are kept. The remaining amount can then easily be paid.

“We are delighted that our Photo Payment has established itself as a popular and successful feature in German banking apps. Users not only appreciate the quick and easy way to pay bills but also the practical and intuitive user experience”, says Alexander Jäger, CEO of Gini. “Unlike on-device products, which are not available to all users due to hardware limitations, the Gini Photo Payment can be used by all bank customers. At the center of this is our proprietary artificial intelligence, which we use to define market-leading standards.”

*The data used is based on an online survey conducted by YouGov Deutschland GmbH on behalf of Gini, in which 2,031 people took part between 17 and 19 September 2024. The results were weighted and are representative of the German population aged 18 and over.
